Zithromax is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic that prevents bacteria from being able to grow. This happens as the antibiotic interferes with the bacteria's ability to make proteins. Due to the way in which proteins are made in bacteria within humans, these antibiotics will not interfere with a person's ability to make proteins. The chemicals within Zithromax are related to Erythromycin and Clarithromycin, which is also known as Biaxin. Even so, Zithromax is an unusual medication because it actually stays in your body for quite some time. This allows for this medication to be taken only once a day and for a shorter period for most infections. Zithromax is effective in treating a wide variety of bacteria organisms. These include Staphylococcus Aureus, Hemophilus Influenzae, Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, Streptococus Pneumoniae, Mycobacterium Avium and numerous other types of bacterial infections.
